The story of Fernando Araújo and Isabel Magalhães is a testament to their love for their roots and for the beauty of Portugal. Despite having lived in the United States for over 40 years, they never forgot the small village of Selim, in Arcos de Valdevez.
Fernando’s childhood memories — running through the hills, chatting with neighbors, and helping his father with the tractor — have always remained vivid in his mind, even from thousands of miles away.
In 1991, the year they were married, they decided to purchase a piece of land near the house where Fernando grew up. For many years, they spent two months every summer there, gradually renovating the property. However, the original house had many stairs and was no longer suitable for their age. It was then that the idea of transforming the property into a rural tourism project emerged.
But Fernando wanted to do more than simply open a country house. He wanted to revitalize the village of Selim, which had become forgotten and nearly without children. With great determination, he acquired several neighboring properties and began developing what would become the Casas de Selim project.
Construction began in 2017, and in June 2021, Casas de Selim opened its doors to the public, following a total investment of over €2 million. The development comprises six country houses, each with its own story and unique character. Some preserve original features such as interior stone walls and traditional ovens, while others blend historic elements with modern construction.
Casas de Selim is more than just a place to stay; it is an effort to bring life back to a forgotten village. Although Fernando still lives in the United States, his heart and passion remain in Portugal. His greatest goal is to return permanently in the coming years and dedicate himself fully to Casas de Selim. After all, this is where he truly feels at home.
